The Pirate's Tale of Geoffrey Rush

(3 minute read)

After a nostalgic run of the old Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, I was so impressed by Geoffrey Rush's performance as Captain Hector Barbosa in Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and At World's End (2007).

So I went to Google and found this nugget: "Rush is amongst 24 people who have won the Triple Crown of Acting: an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Tony Award."

Ok makes sense.

The Australian actor's portrayal as a pirate captain was everything you would want and expect out of folk tales that describe people who sail and pillage for a living. From his sword battles to his favorite eye-widening stares at Johnny Depp or Captain Jack Sparrow, it just felt so authentic even if you knew you never met a pirate. Yep the best part about his pirate voice and mannerisms is that when he says "Argh" and "Mateys", it doesn't feel forced at all. In fact, it repeatedly fools you into thinking he really is a pirate and that, I believe, is the hallmark of good acting. For an actor to execute his or her character so well so as to make you FEEL his presence is something so remarkable.

So with that, I present to you an infographic of / honor to Geoffrey Rush's success over the years, highlighting his Oscar nominations as well as the IMDb ratings of all his works.

While films are collective efforts of the film crew and actors, it is cool to highlight the strong average success of his works over the years. While most people will remember him as Captain Barbosa, those same people are unlikely to know that he was nominated for four Oscars, one of which he won for Best Actor, from four different films in his career. And clearly, none of those nominations came from being Captain Barbosa.

Nevertheless, Rush's performance as one of the nine Pirate Lords will probably stand the test of time, especially for being part of the crew that upset expectations in 2002 that a pirate film would bust in the box office. I think the 68-year old actor's command of drama will deserve him a Hall of Fame / GOAT title by the time he retires. Salute to King Barbosa.
