Today SpaceX launched its first manned mission to the International Space Station, aboard the Crew Dragon Demo-2 spacecraft.

On Wednesday May 27, the day the launch was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather conditions, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine mentioned that the significance of this launch is attached to the hope that missions like this will inspire the next generation of astronauts.

We believe in audiovisual experiences, and likewise, it is why movies hold such personal significance in our lives. Bridenstine said that watching Top Gun (1986) inspired him to become a Navy pilot, so why can't movies about outer space do the same for future space travelers?

But how well are Outer Space films received? Quite well.

Outer Space-type films have been strong performing genres for years, especially over the last decade. While there have been some busts, the ones that do well in the Box Office end up grabbing Academy Awards later that year.

Space travel and science fiction make these films not only fascinating to watch but also realistic enough to understand because there is so much we already know is possible with our current space travel capabilities. And if you haven't heard, Tom Cruise plans to be the first actor-astronaut when he eventually teams up with SpaceX and NASA to shoot what might I'd call "Mission Impossible X" in space.

Before that comes out though, here are some past outer space movies, all of which have won or been nominated for at least one Oscar.
